Hackney development scheme gains council support
Date:
21 Jul 2008
Hackney council officials have backed a property developer over a £700 redevelopment project to the east of central London, according to reports.
Ignoring vocal opposition from the likes of politician George Galloway and artist Tracey Emin, the London borough is supporting the Hammerson development project, with planning officials advising councillors to approve the scheme when they meet later this week, reports the Telegraph.
Some one million square feet of office, hotel and housing space is to be created on the site of the former Bishopsgate Goods Yard.
Council planning officials reported that the new development would help address the "significant" unemployment levels across the borough."
Hammerson project director Joanna Axon said the proposals provided "a chance to revitalise a largely empty site and create thousands of new jobs."
She added: "The overall benefits of the scheme in terms of employment, homes and improved pedestrian access ensure that our proposals will bring significant benefits to the local community."
"Our proposals have been developed following three years of consultation with the local community and the council, so we are excited that a decision can now be made."
Hammerson is a European real estate company, operating mainly in the UK and France.
